Program Info

Archer and Gordon’s Cadenzas program explores the idea of freedom in music and how contemporary composers have explored this idea in their music, using the melodic beauty of the clarinet and the rhythmic drive of percussion as their medium.

Cadenzas by Canadian composer Alexina Louie, whose work informs the theme of the program, employs cadenzas to show off the brilliant virtuosity of the performers. In Jitterbug/Ballad by Chris Rozé, a stratospheric clarinet cadenza introduces a soulful, graceful slow tune for clarinet and marimba. Sonata for Clarinet and Percussion by John Heins, uses a clarinet cadenza as a bridge that connects disparate sections of the work. Finally, in Yeni Makam 4 by Edward Hines the sensual writing of the clarinet part is inspired by traditional improvisatory and melodic techniques found in classical Turkish music. Traditional Turkish instruments, lays down a steady groove.
